Can You Handle A Dental Emergency?

At Weber Family Dental, we hope you never experience a serious dental emergency. It’s important, however, to know what to do in such a situation. Here is a quiz on dental emergencies and less urgent oral issues.

1. One of the wires on your braces breaks. What do you do?

a. Cut off the loose piece.
b. Put a piece of orthodontic wax on the end if it is irritating your tongue or gums. Schedule an appointment with your orthodontist to have it fixed.
c. If the wire has cut your gums, rinse with a solution of salt and water.

Both b and c are correct. If you don’t have a piece of orthodontic wax, you can use a cotton ball to cover the sharp end. If you cut off the loose end of the wire, you risk swallowing it.

2. Your five year-old falls off his bike, hits his face on the sidewalk, and knocks out one of his front teeth. What do you do before driving immediately to the nearest Cumming dental office or Lawrenceville ER?

a. Put the tooth back in the socket.
b. If the tooth is dirty, scrub it with a brush.
c. Put the tooth in milk.

The answer depends on whether it is a permanent tooth or a baby tooth. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, it may be successfully re-implanted if done quickly. Make sure you only hold the tooth by the crown, never touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water being cautious not to brush off any tissue attached. It is best to reinsert the tooth into the socket. This may not be possible with younger children. Baby teeth should not be reinserted because it can potentially damage the emerging tooth.

b. Take an OTC pain reliever.
c. Put an aspirin on the tooth.

4. One of your teeth suddenly darkens. What are the possible causes?

d. An infection.

You Won’t Be Out Cold (Unless You Want To Be!)

Does your heart start pounding at the mere thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you drive by any Athens cosmetic dental practice?

Many Gainesville residents who have improved their smile with cosmetic dentistry chose to use sedation. Though the terms “sleep dentistry” and “oral conscious sedation” are often used interchangeably, they are not identical. There are three main types of sedation dentistry.

Nitrous Oxide
The first level uses nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” as it is sometimes called. Nitrous oxide has been used in Gainesville cosmetic dental offices for generations because it is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the procedure, but wears off quickly after the mask is pulled off. Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedatives don’t start working as quickly as nitrous oxide, but they help most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. These medications, however, do not usually produce complete unconsciousness. Thus, oral sedatives and nitrous oxide are used in “conscious” sedation. Two common sedatives used by Athens dentists are diazepam and triazolam.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery and results in true “sleep dentistry.” Most patients are completely oblivious to what is going on in their mouth. IV sedation is often used for procedures such as root canals, wisdom teeth extractions and multi-procedure smile makeovers.

To Chew Or Not To Chew In Gainesville

Hello Gainesville gum chewers, today we’re going to talk about that sticky wad in your mouth. You know that it can freshen your breath, but can it really help prevent cavities? That’s the question we’re asking in today’s Gainesville dental blog.

It really depends on the type of gum. Chewing regular sucrose-based gum can help remove bits of food from the surface of teeth, but that benefit is negated by the stream of sugar washing over your teeth as you chew.

However, gums with some alternative sweeteners have an added benefit for your pearly whites. Xylitol is a sweetener which not only has fewer calories than traditional sugars, but it also has antimicrobial properties that reduce plaque buildup. This means that xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes tooth decay.

So if you’re headed out to any restaurants in the Cumming, Norcross, or Athens area, bring a pack of sugar-free gum with you and pop it in your mouth when your meal is done. Of course, brushing and flossing are a better option for your oral health, but when you can’t brush, choose a sugarless gum with xylitol to chew.

“Don’t Take Stress Out On Your Teeth, Gainesville”

Hello, I’m Dr. Joseph Weber, a family dentist in Gainesville GA. At my practice I have noticed more and more of my patients with stress-related dental issues. Gainesville men and women may not think about it, but stress can do a number on your oral health.

Mouth sores, clenching and grinding, gum disease, and poor oral hygiene can all be exacerbated by stress.
